Back when Xbox One was announced, the list of non friendly features turned off gamers to an extent that a series of jokes, memes and websites started up. But one fine day, gamers started referring the upcoming console as ‘Xbone’. Heck, Microsoft’s presentation of the Xbox One was also not spared, as it emphasized a lot more on TV, tv, tv…and tv (and EA sports…and call of duty…and Halo TV series- again- TV!)
Though Microsoft made multiple changes since their announcement, the name ‘xbone’ seemed more permanent among the gaming community. It provoked Microsoft to an extent that it promoted them to buy the domain name ‘xbone.com‘ which existed since the year 2000, and as pointed out by Forbes, assumed to be a name for a porn site in the future. Currently, its redirected to Bing’s search site.
Major Nelson addressed the issue of Xbox One’s nickname in NeoGaf. He said:
I don’t like it…it disrespects the teams that have put in thousands of hours (already) into the development of the product. Sure, it’s cheeky but I don’t care for it myself.
He may and may not cared for it, but someone in Microsoft did as they’ve purchase the domain name after 2 days since the interview.
The origin of the name ‘xbone.com’ may not necessarily be linked of the nickname, but it would be interesting to see how long would the upcoming console will still be called as Xbone.
